Life took over there for a bit - but now I'm DONE with comps, the school year's over, and some stress that happened right at the semester end is past. I've been knitting bunches, but mostly posting things on Ravelry instead of here... because it's easier and I'm lazy. I do want to get back into the blogging-world, so expect new posts here soon :)Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08698144152136691623noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6340589856578936810.post-58264724812462211012008-01-07T18:26:00.000-06:002008-01-07T18:45:00.231-06:00Salina!Pattern: Salina from Rowan Vintage Knits
Yarn: Rowan Felted Tweed in Watery

I finished it!!! It only took about five months, but it was worth it. I feel like I really accomplished something with Salina - buttons, LOTS of sewing-up, and the smallest gauge I've ever used on something this big. My only real mod-type-thing was to lengthen the arms by working more stitches between increases than the pattern called for. They came out my absolute perfect length - past my wrist and able to stretch up & cover my hands if I need them to. Mmm.

My main gripe with the pattern was that it definitely used more yarn than called for, which is looking more & more to be a kind of Rowan trait... at least next time I'll be prepared with extra. Felted tweed is fantastic; I absolutely love how it knits up - light, yet sturdy-feeling and warm!

I'm not totally satisfied with the whole group of finished-Salina-pictures I have so far, plus I haven't blocked it, so I'll probably be posting a few more in a bit. But for now yay happy finished sweaters!!Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08698144152136691623noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6340589856578936810.post-58188258945521921492007-12-11T21:57:00.000-06:002007-12-11T22:21:06.057-06:00my buttons, let me show you them
Thing the first: Today was a SNOW DAY. It was fantastic. I made a big homemade breakfast and then just lounged around, doing various work-y and craft-y things. Very restful.

Thing the next: My recentest obsession is: buttons. They are neat! And cute! And useful! What's not to like? I had bought a random box of Ball jars at Walmart a while back, and just now realized that cute little jars make perfect cute little button containers.

Also, over Thanksgiving break on a random craft-store whim, I invested a total of $2.30 in two packs of "MAXANT Buttons To Cover" which promptly fell to the bottom of my travelling-back-to-Iowa bags. But not for long! Today, I made them! They are the AWESOME. They are maybe the easiest crafty thing to make ever (seriously: cut fabric into circle. push the whole dealy together. tada! button) and you can have buttons that match anything! So of course I made some that match nothing I actually need buttons for. But someday, they will be needed. I made tiny purple ones and not-so-tiny star print ones.

In other news (like say, knitting) I have been working like mad on Neaty! She is all sewn up! What's left: 31 ends to sew in ...GAHhh, and the left side buttonband to finish (once I get the yarn for it in the mail). I'm happy with the general cozy-ness of the yarn and sweater design, not so happy with the fact that the yarn estimates given in the pattern were WAY off. I am going to have used something like 80 more yards of contrast (trim) color than the pattern called for by the time this is all said and done. So warning if you're looking into this pattern, buy extra stuff, don't listen to the crazy Rowan pattern yarn-estimatey people, because clearly they're confused, just a bit.Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08698144152136691623noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6340589856578936810.post-69559858292653027202007-11-27T00:57:00.000-06:002007-11-27T01:05:03.877-06:00v. shortbut still here! I'm feeling... out of sorts, and just kinda behind on things, which is why the not-much-recent-posting. I have been knitting though, just not picturing so much. Neaty is almost done! It's got one side seam & sleeve sewn (geez, alliteration much), and the second sleeve on the needles, and so far it even seems to fit. Finished-sweatery-goodness soooooon.

I also was donated a tripod over Thanksgiving break! So when I do get back to picturing, they will be so super. No more of that amazing "looking up from the floor" angle or attempting to prop the camera sideways with tape & books. It will be super and professional and all that stuff, so I'm kinda excited really.Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08698144152136691623noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6340589856578936810.post-29205785514881737332007-11-04T23:12:00.000-06:002007-11-04T23:28:45.948-06:00rav l reeee
I got into Ravelry (about two weeks ago) and have FINALLY gotten around to putting some actual content on my profile. Right now it's got pictures of Clessidra, Lily, Neaty, Juliet, Salina, and the Easy Flame Lace Scarf (*hearts the malabrigo laceweight*). I think my favorite part of Ravelry is looking at all the things I want to make, but on actual people rather than models! Before I was on it, I had to be content with one or two google links to someone's blog (which I'm not discounting!) every time I was curious about a new project, but now... NOW! I look up 'Salina' and right there: 113 projects. Amazing.

I even actually knit some today (look above if you don't believe me)! Neaty is coming along sooo fast - a great counterpoint to the slow-itude of the Salina.

Finally I leave you with this: my camera attempting to look up my skirt (and the lone finished Clessidra!). And I LOVE IT!

The pattern, as you may recall, is Simplicity 3964 - one of the Built by Wendy shirts. I will SO be making more of her stuff - it was (mostly) fun and the perfect mix of easy/challenging to get me back into this 'sewing' thing. Back from the one time I made some pj shorts, in seventh grade or whenever it was we took sewing class. The cheapo fabric from Walmart actually worked well with the pattern, I think - a thicker/nicer fabric would stick out a lot more all around (which defintely is not needed). I'm torn on the size a little - my practice was a 12, and I went down to a 10 for the real thing, but looking at the practice pictures, I think the bust on the bigger size actually fit a little more nicely. I still love it, though! I am super excited to sew even more things in the future :)

Linky time for more photos of shirt at flickr! Note: some of them are scary so watch out! Also you may notice what appears to be a tiny mole on my face. Further post-picture inspection revealed that to be chocolate ice cream. Hee.

Speaking of love... the knitting's actually been getting some again recently. I've just been feeling all-around a little more on top of things, and inspired to work on projects, in the last few days. I went ahead and bought some extra Felted Tweed for Salina, because I think my fear of running out (a totally legitimate one, you'd believe me if you'd seen the making of sleeve #1 which, for one thing, involved ripping out the gauge swatch for extra yarn) was keeping me from moving ahead. I also put in a little time on the old Clessidra. They will be done... someday. I think I started them in March, so if I could have it in me to finish them before say, next March, I think I'll be happy.

I also started Neaty! I actually think I like it, despite the chartreusey-ness of my yarn choice (click for the pic, but the internet does not adequately capture just HOW scary bright yellow-green it is). It's basically a cardigan with a big wide contrast bottom border, collar, and buttonband, and as I'm knitting it up, I really am getting the feeling that the darker green contrast border will have the power to make the whole thing work. Plus I need out of my grey/navy blue rut! Now if I could just finish one whole sweater before the winter descends... it'd be lovely to be warm, it would.

Lastly, I kind of just bought craploads of yarn/patterns (I blame the internet, and anyway it was payday, so it's all okay!) so be expecting many happy knitting updates to come.Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08698144152136691623noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6340589856578936810.post-88881311392932586622007-10-29T23:32:00.001-06:002007-10-29T23:48:37.843-06:00not knitting, but...I am making this shirt! The one you see in the picture's my
practice version - both to figure out the sizing, and to deal with the fact that I haven't sewn since, oh, seventh grade. I'm amazed! It's going along really well, and the screwups I've made are all stuff that'll be way easy to fix when I do the real thing. I'm making my final version one size smaller in dark/light purple (dark on the yoke/diamond part, light on the bottom) and I just finished cutting out the pieces tonight! Let the sewing-up commence! The pattern I'm using is Simplicity 3964 (it's in the middle of that page) and uh, yeah it's awesome. Also, my back hurts. I will be watching the upcoming season of Project Runway with a newfound respect for how much work this is! I mean, I've only made one measly practice shirt and I'm a little wiped out.

There is some knitting occurring too, not to worry. It's just that I'm a little afraid I won't have enough yarn for my 2nd Salina sleeve. I finished the first sleeve using an entire skein, plus my unraveled gauge swatch, plus a little extra of the felted tweed. And all I have left is one last whole skein, plus a little extra. So it all depends on how much that 'little extra' is. And then seaming? Yipes. I'm pretty sure Rowan's yarn estimates were off, cause I'm making the small and it lists six skeins as the needed amount for the extra-small, small, AND the medium. I'm way on gauge and I know I'd've run out long ago if I were making the medium.

Yargh. So that explains a little of why I've turned to sewing the last few days. Also, sewing is awesome and also, it was making me a little sad to have spent all that money on a sewing machine that wasn't getting any use. Well use it will get! I don't care if I have to neglect all my schoolwork to do it!Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08698144152136691623noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6340589856578936810.post-21549889818577014922007-10-24T22:56:00.000-06:002007-10-24T23:02:36.113-06:00sooooo........I don't really have new content. I was sick all last week, school's kicking my ass, my progress on Salina sleeve #1 is kinda non-existent (and will I have enough yarn?!?), but I kinda had to post these. If only so that later I will see this and remember to make them.

CUTENESS

And do I have a whole stash of corks lying around just waiting for me to draw little eyes and noses all over them and put tiny hats and sweaters on them and bring them to my office to keep on my desk because my officemates/students don't think I'm quite odd enough yet? OH YES I DO.Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08698144152136691623noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6340589856578936810.post-62201419806931372992007-10-04T23:55:00.000-06:002007-10-05T00:03:09.649-06:00yay! kindaMy camera got here! But... I was not here, so it did not stay - it got back on the FedEx truck and so I don't actually have it. I signed the little slip and stuck it back on the door, so let's all cross our fingers for tomorrow.

I started on the lapel section of Salina this afternoon - I am so close to being done with the entire front and back sections! I also got the yarn I ordered for Neaty (see two posts down...) and it's kinda chartreuse-y. I plan on making it work, because I'm pretty sure that's what Tim Gunn would tell me to do. In the same order I also got a copy of Knitting From The Top. I am way excited, I've had an urge for a while now to get in on the designing-side of sweaters, and from what I hear/see related to this book, it'll be a fantastic start.

Also I am down to being 9578th on the ravelry list. Less than ten thousand away! Yay! Kinda!Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08698144152136691623noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6340589856578936810.post-1404842905947432142007-10-02T16:17:00.001-06:002007-10-02T16:20:29.043-06:00grar-inverseYippee!! I just got the email that they are fixing my camera... should be done in about a week! Pictures pictures pictures to come. There will be lots as I am knitting approximately 4438422 different things at the moment.

That's really all - knitting news is that I'm still working on all the things I was working on before, and waiting for some other things to arrive in the mail, which is pretty much the usual.

So to sum up: yay! and ...yup.Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08698144152136691623noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6340589856578936810.post-34701795980640060782007-09-29T22:35:00.000-06:002007-09-29T23:58:09.277-06:00grarMy camera is gone, well, for right now. I hope to know in a few days whether or not the fixin'll be free. That would be soooo lovely, what with the being a grad student and all.

I finished the back of Salina today! For some reason the neck shaping confused me, but I think I got it all worked out. Did I mention yet how superawesome Felted Tweed is? Because it is. I need to find more felted-tweed-using-patterns, now!

I also bought some yarn for Neaty from Rowan 42. The Rowan Cocoon called for looks soooo nice and soft and all that, but I'm not feeling quite up to spending the hundred-odd bucks that'd take right now. I found Laines du Nord Softlights on elann.com though, which looks to be a good substitute... and the order, with some extra for longer sleeves (because I apparently have freaky long arms and ew, unintentional shorty sleeves!) hit somewhere around $30. That I can do. I looked up the Softlights on google as well, just to check out that it was a decent yarn, and found this. WHICH IS SO CUTE. And she comments specifically on its soft-and-snuggliness, which is what I'm all about for this sweater.

I made a really snazzy MSpaint picture to figure out the colors, too. Because I like to utilize the miracle of technology. Technology that is as old as me.

These are the two greens I ordered - my dilemma was which one for main color. Based on these extremely lifelike models of the hypothetical sweater, I came out liking the one using the light green as the main color, and darker green as the collar/cuffs. The Rowan pattern does it in a similar way with tan and brown, and I think it just has a really cool look. What do you think?

Yippee! Now back to grading (in the world of what-should-I-be-doing) and watching Buffy (in the world of yay!). I'm mid-season-six right now and whoa. Lots to process. Also I cry a lot (in a good way!) when I watch Buffy by myself. I have lots of feelings, what can I say.Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08698144152136691623noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6340589856578936810.post-69630775516115165332007-09-25T11:37:00.000-06:002007-09-28T09:22:29.741-06:00oh em GEEEEE
these are SO CUTE.
I wants them NOW.
WANT.

There are like 17000 more at Crafty Alien.

I originally saw them through this blog, which made for some good reading as well :)
I'm loving the entire knitblog universe at the moment, for just general awesomeness and inspiration.

And my camera may be getting fixed for free! And so, yay! Pictures of what I'm making!!

But then here is its sad attempt at a 'photograph':

Or maybe not so much so much 'sad' as 'belongs in a haunted house'...
If you look closely you may be able to make out the Juliet-half-on-the-needles I was attempting to model. But I'm guessing no.

So the pictures of the actual objects will not soon be forthcoming :'(

However, here are some other pictures, of what these actual objects will someday look like, just in different colors and all crazy-professional and junk. So yay! Kind of, but less yay! than if they were my own.

"Lily" from the Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Collection

I'm using Cashmerino Aran (yippee for softy-ness!)
in Cranberry color (013).

So far I've finished like 1.5 inches of the back... it's going verrry slowly.

"Salina" from Rowan Vintage Style

in Felted Tweed - color watery

Extra special bonus note: Felted Tweed is awesome. It knits up all super-even and into the studiest fabric. And it's preeeetty... my color is a kind of muted teal, with little white and gold and black and grey and purple bits thrown in, and is nowhere near as gaudy as that list of colors suggests.

Lastly, I recently found craftster. Where was this website all my life? It's so awesome to have all those pictures, discussions, pattern advice, and so on grouped in one place, and I'm pretty damn amazed at everyone's mad skills and even madder creativity.

Yay for inspiration!Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08698144152136691623noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6340589856578936810.post-1358955244125237152007-09-06T08:26:00.000-06:002007-09-28T09:23:51.840-06:00I'm ba-ack...No, I didn't fall off the face of the earth there. It was evil grad school with its evil quals making me feel guilt about doing anything other than studystudystudy all stupid summer. I knit once in a while, but not really enough to have anything to show for it.

But now! Glorious free time, or at least time I can pretend is free time relatively guilt-free. The "sweater I'm making up" from last time's post has been frogged... it just wasn't going anywhere. But no tears - it's now on its way to becoming Juliet, another fine cutest-sweater-ever from the Zephyr Style girls. There are other projects too - I'm STILL finishing up that other sock, or maybe starting is a better word. And on a buying spree after I got my loan refund last week, I invested in a couple new Rowan books and some yarn for actually making some of the sweaters out of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Collection, and Rowan Vintage Style.

Anyway, I've gotta run but soon soon there will be some pictures and an update that's more than a glorified list! Yay!Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08698144152136691623noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6340589856578936810.post-34906099624724876162007-04-28T19:40:00.000-06:002007-04-28T19:49:24.803-06:00Things I'm Knittingor... hi, I have no attention span...
or... it's time to procrastinate on on finals...

Clockwise from top left:

Sweater I'm making up in bright green Cascade Sierra
Fitted Tank by Blue Sky Alpacas in sage Organic Cotton
Clessidra kneesock in royal blue Plymouth Sockotta
Turtle Dishcloth in sea green Peaches n Cream
K1P1 ribbed scarf in copper/blue Dive Autmno

Not quite sure if the Fitted Tank is really gonna be my style... but hey, it seems easy enough! I'd love to get actual pictures taken by someone else, but for today there'll just be the obligatory holding-the-camera-out generic blog picture. I mostly used a 40" circular, and did the magic loop so that I wasn't switching between a bunch of different lengths.
Comments: SO cute! I love everything about this pattern. The leaf part was my first lace ever, and it was super easy. If you plan to knit it, I'd buy a skein or so more yarn than it indicates - my skeins were slightly longer than the Cotton Fleece used in the pattern, and I still needed four rather than the recommended three. I did make it longer than the pattern said to, because too-short sweaters make me a sad panda. But still, I woulda run out of three skeins even sans lengthening. Also I suck at binding off loosely, but luckily the bottom didn't turn out too tight to wear. In the future I need to learn a wayyy more elastic bindoff, though. All in all, I love it though! I definitely will be knitting more zephyr style patterns in the future.

Next up: Fitted Tank by Blue Sky Alpacas, in Sage Organic Cotton. Um, this stuff is not cotton. It's too unbelievably soft and pretty. And it knitted exactly to gauge! No emergency needle-buying trip for this one. Blue Sky Alpacas might be my new favorite. Everything they make is pretty much the softest anything ever. I'm also working on some sort of sweater design - I have this crazy vision of an empire-waist cardigan, and after a thorough scouring of the internets... nothing matches up with the picture in my head. So I'm attempting to make it up myself. The plan's to kinda copy how the top-down part works from the Rusted Root, but knit it flat with room for button-bands, then bind off under the bust and pick up a kind of skirt-y part from there. Seed stitch borders, buttons only on the bound-off top section. We'll see if this works... if it does, who knows where this could lead?Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08698144152136691623noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6340589856578936810.post-47091068371315231022007-04-09T16:38:00.000-06:002007-04-09T16:54:07.162-06:00yo!So... hi! I said I was starting a knitblog and here it is. Introduction in order, I guess, although if you made it here, you probably know me somehow. I'm Annie, I'm a grad student in pure mathematics, I'm trapped living in the deep-midwest but I travel far away whenever I get the chance, I could read books all day and not get sick of them (math texts excluded), and most importantly, I knit. I first picked up needles when I was about eight, and made a few... squares with lots of holes in them, mostly. Didn't knit much for awhile until sophomore year at college, when one of my RLAs started knitting as a hall activity. I slowly picked up steam, made a couple kneesocks and the ubiquitous cat-ear-hat, from Stitch&Bitch, an iPod cover, and most recently my first sweater, to name a few things. I think that sweater was the tipping point and now I'm obcessed. What I've currently got going: Rusted Root, Clessidra, another cat-hat, and a dishcloth. Pictures to come. Right now I've gotta run!

So count me into the ranks of the knitbloggers. Here goes!Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08698144152136691623noreply@blogger.com1
